Special Issue Introduction

Energy consumption in modern society has been continuously increasing. With concerns about the rapid exhaustion of fossil fuels as well as global warming, it is critical to utilize renewable energy resources. The development of renewable energy resources requires grid-level stationary energy storage systems. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are currently widely utilized for portable energy storage, electric vehicles, and even stationary energy storage systems. Along with the expansion of demand for them and their applications, concerns about the resource availability and price of Li have been growing. Therefore, new rechargeable batteries based on raw materials that feature abundant resources and low cost have become highly desirable choices to complement LIBs.

This Special Issue, “Advanced Materials for Future-Generation Rechargeable Batteries”, will report the advances in the research on electrode materials, electrolytes, separators, multiscale characterization and analysis, advanced electrochemical characterizations, and in-situ/operando characterizations. Manuscripts are solicited in the following areas, but not limited to: Na-ion batteries, K-ion batteries, Zn-ion batteries, sulfur-based batteries, and metal-air batteries.

Keywords

Na/K/Zn-ion batteries, sulfur-based batteries, metal-air batteries, electrode materials, electrolytes, separators, advanced characterizations, computational design and modeling, new architectures
